MANAGER – PROCESS AUTOMATION

Reports to: Director - Process Automation Department: Information Technology & Automation


About the role

The Manager – Process Automation provides key functional, business and technical knowledge to the Process Automation and Control teams supporting service delivery obligations of the organization, as well as oversees the automation of production processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety. Stelco has three main process automation divisions, Primary Production, Hot Sheet Finishing, and Cold Rolled and Coated. This candidate will work collaboratively with two other process automation groups. Safety is the Core Value of Stelco and the individual will make Safety the #1 priority in the execution of all work activities, including monitoring contractor/vendor safety in support of work efforts.


Your day-to-day:

• Developing Automation Strategies: Crafting strategies for the automation of steel manufacturing processes to improve productivity and reduce costs.

• Training and Support: Providing training and support to staff on new systems and technologies to ensure smooth operation and adherence to safety standards.

• Compliance and Safety: Ensuring all automation practices comply with industry regulations and maintaining a focus on workplace safety.

The Manager will work with the team to deliver:

• System Design and Integration: Designing, implementing, and integrating new automation systems while ensuring compatibility with existing processes.

• Performance Monitoring: Continuously monitoring system performance to ensure optimal operation and quickly addressing any issues that arise.

• Maintenance and Upgrades: Scheduling regular maintenance and updates for automation equipment to prevent downtime and extend the lifespan of systems.

• Collaboration with Teams: Collaborating with engineering, production, and IT teams to align automation systems with business goals and production needs.

• Data Analysis: Analyzing data collected from automation systems to identify trends, improve processes, and make informed decisions.


Job Qualifications:

• 10-15 years’ experience in automation software design, development and/or process automation applied in a manufacturing environment including Software Development Lifecycles and Project Development Methodologies

• Bachelor's degree

• Manufacturing experience is preferred

• Project management experience

• Comprehensive knowledge of third-party offerings in the Process Control area, including understanding of trends, vendors, and new technology offerings (hardware and software)

• General understanding of mathematical modeling functions and techniques applied in a process control environment.

• Experience with Quality Management Systems applied in a software development environment

• Fundamental understanding and hands-on experience with process and quality control concepts, equipment, and processes in a manufacturing environment.

• Prior supervisory/management/leadership experience over Process Automation or online measurement/monitoring technical professionals is desired.

• Be a change agent capable of leadership and proactive thinking that improves individual and team performance and behavior. Strong team skills in various roles – lead, mentor, participant.

• Demonstrated effective organization, time management and communication skills. Ability to balance demands for routine, project and troubleshooting activities for self and coordination for up to 10 direct reports.

• Ability to communicate/coordinate with different levels and multiple departments within the organization. Strong written/verbal communication skills and internal customer focus.

• Demonstrated project management skills. Experience with all phases of capital project scoping and execution is desired.

• Demonstrated problem-solving skills with ability to lead team improvement efforts, analyze data and recommend solutions. Experience/training in ISO, Lean Six Sigma, RCA or other structured problem-solving methodologies is a plus.

• Strong computer skills overall along with abilities for statistical, analytical and diagnostic problem-solving skills.

• Must be willing to perform in an on-call environment, including weekends and occasional altered work schedules.

• Normal, fast-paced office environment for a high impact team

• Some work outside of the normal scheduled working hours including weeknights, weekends, and holidays may be required to manage process automation issues and implementations
